About Roseburg

Named after an early settler, Aaron Rose, Roseburg is a lively city on the banks of Oregon’s South Umpqua River. It flourished on the back of the lumber industry to become the self-proclaimed “Timber Capital of the Nation” and was famously referenced by Johnny Cash in his 1960 song “Lumberjack”.

On the southern edge of Roseburg is the Douglas County Museum, which showcases the natural and cultural history of the region over the last 10,000 years. It occupies an award-winning building dating back to 1969 that was designed by the Backen, Arrigoni & Ross architectural firm. Browse the detailed dioramas detailing life in the Umpqua River Valley and learn about the native wildlife that calls the area “home”.

Art enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to the Umpqua Valley Arts Association, which occupies a former military hospital fronted by six soaring pillars. It operates several gallery spaces where rotating exhibitions are showcased, as well as a pottery studio and a workshop. You can shop for locally made gifts in the on-site store or coincide your visit with one of the community events that are regularly held here.

Roseburg serves as a gateway to Watson Falls, a 90-metre-high cascade that lies within the Umpqua National Forest. It can be accessed along a short loop trail, which offers an up-close view of the waterfall’s basalt cliffs and connects to a wooden bridge at its base. Nearby is the shield volcano of Mount Bailey, where you can enjoy elevated views of Diamond Lake.
