For a glimpse at Seoul’s past, head to Bukchon Village. Sandwiched between the Gyeongbok Palace and Jongmyo Royal Shrine, it’s home to beautifully preserved Korean buildings and a string of charming tea houses.
Want to experience the high life? Take a stroll around trendy Samcheong-dong, a tree-lined neighbourhood dotted with contemporary art galleries, chic cafes and clothing boutiques. Get lost in the Dongdaemun or Namdaemun night markets, then dance the night away to K-Pop classics in the clubbing districts of Hongdae and Itaewon.
Seoul is a foodie’s paradise, which means indulging in a traditional hanjeongsik banquet is a must. Don’t miss sampling the crispy hotteok pancakes flipped by street stall vendors, followed by a bowl of spicy crab soup at Noryangjin Fish Market. Wash it all down with freshly brewed Oolong at a traditional tea house.
Getting Around
Public transport is excellent in Seoul, which makes the city easy to explore. Learn to navigate the efficient subway system, with nine major lines branching across the city. Trains arrive every five minutes or so, which means you’ll never have to wait long. You can stick to the city centre, or venture further afield to cultural destinations like Heyri, Incheon and Suwon.
