About Pendleton

Serving as the seat of Umatilla County, Pendleton lies on the banks of the Umatilla River in Oregon’s north-east. It is named after George H. Pendleton, an Ohio politician and lawyer, and rose to prominence in the late 19th century as a textile manufacturing hub. The city is also famed for its annual rodeo, the Pendleton Round-Up.

You can delve into the local history at the Heritage Station Museum, which comprises a series of buildings at the city’s former railway station. In addition to the 19th-century Byrd Schoolhouse, there’s a barn and homestead displaying antique farming tools. Also forming part of the complex is a bright yellow caboose donated by the Union Pacific Railroad.

Magnificent views across the Umatilla River can be enjoyed from the Pendleton Riverwalk, which extends the length of the city. Near the western end of the walk is the famous Pendleton Roundup Grandstand, which has been hosting rodeos since 1910. Adjacent is a Hall of Fame filled with rodeo memorabilia.
