About Lantau Island

Lying at the mouth of the Pearl River, Lantau Island rises in the sea with majestic mountains reaching 934 metres at Lantau Peak. The largest of the Hong Kong islands, Lantau gets world recognition as home to Hong Kong Disneyland, but activities range from dolphin excursions to hiking the Lantau Trail and visiting a Buddhist monastery.

Things to do in Lantau Island

Families flock to Hong Kong Disneyland for a scaled-down version of the world-famous Disney theme parks. Offering a more intimate experience, little ones enjoy the renowned Disney parade, fireworks, rides and character encounters.

Visiting the Hong Kong Big Buddha, also known as Tian Tan, places you at the feet of what is considered the world’s largest seated Buddha, towering at 34 metres in height atop Ngong Ping Plateau. A 260-step staircase gives access to its three-tier podium for 360-degree views of the mountains, valleys and sea.

The 20-minute ride to Big Buddha via Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car is an adventure in itself, with an option to ride a “crystal” cabin with a transparent floor. Across from Big Buddha is one of Lantau’s other main attractions, the Po Lin Monastery, a traditional Buddhist temple open to visitors.

Tai O Fishing Village on Lantau’s western coastline is a throwback to the past, with quaint stilt cottages, a lively seafood market and a cluster of shops and cafes. Another family-friendly excursion on Lantau is a Pink Dolphin cruise to glimpse the rare, endangered species and to learn about their habitat.
