About Lamma Island

Located to the southwest of Hong Kong, Lamma Island is home to a unique blend of Chinese and Western cultures. There are traditionally preserved fishing villages, scenic coastal walks, temples, golden beaches, and the island is home some of the best seafood restaurants in Hong Kong.

The roots of Lamma Island are tied to the sea, therefore, Lamma Fisherfolks Village is a great place to begin an island discovery. Visitors can try their hands at fishing, angling, even rope weaving and live like the fisherfolk for a day. Alternatively, venture to the hidden Kamikaze Caves, where visitors can explore the grottos that were used during the Second World War by the Japanese military to store munitions and boats. For those wishing to relax on the glorious beaches of Lamma Island, head for Hung Shing Yeh beach. The crystal clear waters and soft, powdery sands make this a popular place to unwind. In the evenings expect barbecues and music as the sun goes down. To understand more about the local culture, visit Tin Hau Temple at Yung Shue Wan. The temple is dedicated to Tin Hau, Goddess of the sea, a deity revered by local fishermen. Explore the intricately designed artwork and admire the ornamental lion sculptures which guard the temples entrance. One of the best places to shop on the island is Yung Shue Wan Main Street. It showcases a colourful display of local artefacts and handicrafts and has a vibrant atmosphere. For those staying in Hong Kong, it is possible to take a day trip to Lamma Island via ferry from Central Pier. The journey takes around 30 - 40 minutes,and visitors can choose between disembarking at Sok Kwu Wan for the best seafood restaurants or Yung Shue Wan for temples and shopping. As the island is only 6 kilometres in length and 2.5 kilometres wide, it’s an easy place to get around. Bicycles are available, as are motor carts which transport day-trippers around the island.
