About Southport, NC

Overlooking the mouth of the Cape Fear River, Southport was established in the mid-18th century as a fort to defend the Carolina coast against pirate attacks. It was originally known as Smithville after a colonel in the Continental Army, who fought during the Revolutionary War. In the early 20th century, it became a major commercial port when it was connected by rail to Wilmington.

Things to do in Southport

One of Southport’s most popular attractions is the North Carolina Maritime Museum, which delves into the fascinating history of the local waterways. Learn about the notorious local pirate Stede Bonnet and see artefacts from the colonial port of Brunswick, then get up close to part of a 2,000-year-old Native American canoe. Also exhibited are models of Southport’s most notable vessels.

After your visit, enjoy a stroll through Waterfront Park, which offers magnificent views across the Cape Fear River. You can cast a fishing line from the pier that extends into the water, relax on one of the porch swings or learn about the history of Whittler’s Bench. Just behind the Southport Fishing Pier is the Fort Johnston-Southport Museum & Visitors' Center, which explores the city’s evolution.

If you want to experience what it was like to be locked up in times gone by, head to the Old Brunswick County Jail. It was here that jail scenes from the 1986 film “Crimes of the Heart” were filmed featuring Sissy Spacek. This beautifully restored, red-brick jail dates back to 1904 and features period cells and jailers' living quarters.
