Forming part of North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad, Winston-Salem is a historic city first settled by German-speaking Moravians. Its rich heritage is celebrated at the Open Salem Museum and in the charismatic streets of the West End Historic District and it also boasts one of the country’s finest collections of American Art.

Things to do in Winston-Salem

Discover the legacy of Winston-Salem’s 18th-century Moravian settlers at the Old Salem Museum & Gardens. Wander amidst the original buildings and heirloom gardens, listen to storytelling and traditional music performances and admire the vintage agricultural equipment and artefacts.

Stroll through the West End Historic District that sprawls around one of the first electric streetcar lines in the United States. It was here that wealthy tobacco and textile families established what became known as “Millionaires’ Row”, with eclectic restaurants and boutiques now occupying its 19th-century buildings.

An estate belonging to one of the region’s wealthiest tobacco farmers is now the setting for the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, home to one of the finest collections of American paintings. Admire works by Jacob Lawrence and Georgia O’Keeffe, then wander amidst the formal gardens, Japanese cherry blossoms and wildlife-filled wetlands.

Be inspired by the world of science and technology at the Kaleideum Downtown, a children’s museum that features interactive exhibits and play areas. Climb the crochet structure of “Kaleidescope”, test hypotheses in the “Amazing Airways” tubes and get hands-on in the Art Studio.

Getting around Winston-Salem
