About Sneads Ferry

Once a small fishing village, Sneads Ferry is a rapidly growing town on the Atlantic coast of North Carolina. It is named after Robert Snead, who operated a ferry across the New River in the 18th century. Fishing still dominates the local economy, with Sneads Ferry renowned for its shrimp, flounder and crabs.

Things to do in Sneads Ferry

Works by local artists are showcased at the Thurston Art Gallery, which is owned and operated by local creative, Sherry Thurston. In addition to original paintings and prints, you’ll find handcrafted jewellery and one-of-a-kind T-shirts. It’s located just a stone’s throw from Bayside Thrift with its pre-loved clothing and treasures, as well as the welcoming Sneads Ferry Community Center.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the Yopps Meeting House, a whitewashed Baptist church that dates back to around 1890. Designed in a Greek Revival style, it was built on the site of a log church constructed in the early 19th century. A walk through its two cemeteries offers a fascinating insight into the area’s past, with separate areas for white and African-American parishioners.

Golfers can hit the Bob Moore-designed greens of the North Shore Country Club, which features 18 holes laid out across the coastal marshes. Studded with towering pines, it boasts challenging inland and oceanfront holes exposed to the sea breezes. Non-golfing family members can enjoy a hit of tennis or refresh with a swim in the pool.
