Where to stay in Porirua

About Porirua

Located in the south of New Zealand’s North Island, Porirua is a harbour city on the Kapiti Coast lying within the Wellington urban area 20 kilometres from its centre. The city encompasses its harbour, making it the perfect spot for water sports activities and creating a beautiful natural setting for its 53,000 inhabitants. In addition to its coastal activities, natives know Porirua for its cultural attractions and city life, including a collection of renowned museums.

There is an abundance of hiking opportunities in Porirua, such as Colonial Knob, perfect for snow walks in the winter and stunning, expansive views in the summer, and Battle Hill Park which combines recreation and farming education. Pakata is a museum and art gallery of national significance, exhibiting an impressive genealogical collection and Maori and Pacific Island artwork. On the shores of Plimmerton Beach, visitors can watch the exciting moves of local windsurfers, follow the Pauatahanui Inlet and explore a native wildlife park. The best place for nightlife is nearby Wellington, although there is a range of restaurants to enjoy scattered around the city and enough harbour side pathways to unwind and watch the sunset.

Drivers from Wellington can reach Porirua along the State Highway 1, which is also where visitors can find the nearest airport. Trains also connect the two cities and provide links to other New Zealand destinations, while buses navigate the local region. Inside the city, there are rail services to the suburbs and it is easy to travel by foot.

The name Porirua originates from the language of the Maori People who first occupied the land, meaning “two tides,” referring to the arms crossing the city harbour. A European settlement established itself in the 19th century, and Porirua grew into a substantial city neighbour to Wellington connected by an 1885 railway line.
