About Upper Hutt

A city saturated in natural beauty, Upper Hutt contains 70% of the parks and reserves in the region, located 30 kilometres north of Wellington City in the North Island of New Zealand. It is one of four cities constituting the Wellington metropolitan area and stretches from Rimutaka Hill to Silverstream. Over its 540 square kilometres of land, it is home to over 41,600 people and provides a range of attractions, from nature hikes to cultural entertainment.

The city centre of Upper Hutt offers a range of stylish boutiques, cosy coffee shops and beautiful restaurants, all surrounded by stunning views of encompassing natural scenery. To get into the heart of nature, visitors can travel to Rimutaka Forest Park and even see the native kiwi bird, or bike along the 18-kilometre Rail Trail. For more local wildlife, visitors can go to the Emu Farm or Staglands Wildlife Reserve, or for greater relaxation visit one of the four golf clubs, including Royal Wellington and Te Marua. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore Upper Hutt in many ways, from hiking to swimming to kayaking or gliding, and then cool down in the H2O Xtream water park equipped with hots tubs and a wave pool.

Trains and buses run through and to Upper Hutt, including a railway line through the centre of the city connecting to Wellington, the Wairarapa and the city suburbs. State Highway 2 is the most accessible route for drivers, travelling between Upper Hutt and Wellington and connecting to the Porirua Basin. The nearest airport is Wellington Airport located 35 minutes from Upper Hutt.

Originally inhabited by the Maori People, the name of Upper Hutt was initially “Orongomai” until colonialists, including the explorer Richard Barton, settled upon the land. Barton was the first European resident of the area in 1848, and he divided the land into the sections it has today. Although it was a rural farming and forestry community for a long time, the population of Upper Hutt continued to grow and became a city in 1966.
