About Viveiro

The sun-drenched beach town of Viveiro is one of the best-kept secrets in Galicia. Set on a teardrop-shaped bay at the mouth of the Viveiro River, the town combines historic charm with stunning beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. The population swells during the summer when holidaymakers flock to bask on the sand and swim in the Bay of Biscay.

Things to do in Viveiro

Viveiro is set around a sandy bay framed by rolling hills and pine forests. Playa Covas, the main beach, features a strip of honey-coloured sand and a breezy promenade. For a quieter atmosphere, stroll along the coastal path to uncrowded beaches like Seiramar and Sacido. With a car, you can venture even further up the coast to find a constellation of secluded coves and bays.

While Viveiro isn’t glitzy, you will see historic mansions and villas dotted around town. The Old Town is encircled by the remains of ancient town walls and a trio of Romanesque gates. Built in the 16th century, Castelo da Ponte is the best-preserved gate and a treasured city landmark. You’ll also see a collection of beautiful religious buildings within the city walls, including Romanesque churches and a centuries-old monastery.

Many of the historic buildings in the Old Town have been reimagined as cafes, bars and traditional taverns. Dig into grilled octopus and sip a glass of fruity white made in the Valdeorras winemaking region. The main square hosts a weekly where you can sock up on local cheeses, meats, wines, fresh produce and colourful flowers.

Getting around Viveiro

Viveiro is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, especially in the Old Town. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore the region and beach hop at your own pace. The town is a 1.5-hour drive from A Coruña and five hours from Bilbao.
