About Thorold

On the doorstep of the mighty Niagara Falls, Thorold is a small city near the southern shores of Lake Ontario. It’s traversed by the famous Welland Canal and various walking routes that form the long-distance Bruce Trail.

Things to do in Thorold

Be awed by the thundering water of Horseshoe Falls, which is the most expansive section of the world-famous Niagara Falls. Take in the views from the Skylon Tower’s observation deck or ride the elevator down to the platform near the base of the falls.

Viit the Welland Canal, an engineering marvel originally constructed in 1829 to link Lake Erie with Lake Ontario, offering a safe detour for ships around Niagara Falls. Watch as immense freighters cruise through the orchard blanketed landscapes to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment at the Twin Flight Locks.

Walk to the picturesque Decew Falls, which are located within the Short Hills Provincial Park to the west of Thorold. In addition to the 22-metre-high cascades, the scenic trail takes you pass the charming Morningstar Mill that dates back to 1872.

Continue along part of the 890-kilometre-long Bruce Trail that extends across southern and central Ontario, incorporating numerous waterfalls and diverse landscapes along its route. It boasts magnificent views of the Niagara Escarpment, a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, as well as regular sightings of white-tailed deer.
