Scilla is a traditional fishing village where you can bask on sandy beaches, explore an ancient castle and enjoy a bounty of fresh seafood. The village is perched on the toe of the Italian boot, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine Mountains.

Things to do in Scilla

Ruffo Castle commands a spectacular setting on a rocky ledge overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Medina. On clear days, the views stretch all the way to Sicily and the Ionian Islands. Take in the spectacular views and learn about the legacy of the Ruffo family at the small museum.

The lively beachside neighbourhood of Marina Grande is set on a sheltered bay and fringed by a long stretch of sand. Along the beach, you’ll find “lido” beach clubs where you can rent sun loungers, order snacks and sip ice-cold limoncello. Cool off with a dip in the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea.

Get lost in the maze-like streets and alleys of Chianalea. The neighbourhood cascades down to the Tyrrhenian Sea and bursts with Calabrian charm. Doorsteps and window sills are decorated with terracotta pots overflowing with flowers and succulents. Friendly cats roam the neighbourhood and add to the postcard-perfect setting.

Scilla is dotted with trattorias where you can enjoy traditional Calabrian dishes. Swordfish caught in the Strait of Medina is a delicacy and has been served in Scilla for centuries. Enjoy it served with traditional Calabrian garnishes like chopped parsley, capers and lemon juice. Pair your meal with white wine from a local vineyard. Tartufo di Pizzo, an indulgent dessert made with chocolate and hazelnut gelato, is a local specialty.
