About Sacheon

Sacheon is a city located on the southern tip of South Korea in the South Gyeongsang Province, near to the larger city of Jinju and at the top of Sacheon Bay. It is a young city, resulting from the unification of Samcheonpo-si and Sacheon-gun in 1995. Once a key trade centre, its main industries are now in aerospace and marine tourism, boasting stunning coastal views and natural beauty.

At the harbour of Sacheon, visitors can enjoy the classic cuisine of the area, with raw fish dishes freshly caught by local fishermen and sold at the many waterfront restaurants and food markets. The harbour is also a great place to explore by boat, as many small islands are scattered offshore, attracting visitors who want to witness the traditional fishing practices of the locals. National parks reveal the natural beauty of the area, and visitors can tour Byeoljubujeon Park and Namildae Beach to relax and enjoy the distinct South Korean scenery. For a spark of cultural heritage, visitors can also explore the Aerospace Museum, which has impressive displays of planes and aircraft from different eras.

The main travel centre of Sacheon is its airport, situated in the industrial section of the city, which has various direct domestic links to major South Korean cities. Local bus services connect the city centre to nearby Jinju, where visitors can take the Korean National Railroad to further regional and national destinations. From the capital, Seoul, buses regularly leave on a daily basis and take approximately four hours to reach Sacheon.

Due to its coastal location, Sacheon was once an important trade centre between the coast and inner South Korea, which inspired greater business relationships with China and Japan in ancient times. It was significantly involved in the Seven Year War when two naval battles fought off the coast of Sacheon.
