Where to stay in Pelling

About Pelling

Boasting spectacular views of Kanchenjunga, Pelling is a small hill town in West Sikkim. It’s surrounded by picturesque waterfalls and a sacred lake, as well as one of the region’s oldest monasteries.

Things to do in Pelling

Enjoy a picnic in the Sewaro Rock Garden, a green oasis featuring winding pathways and the gushing waters of the Teesta River. It’s just a short walk to the village of Darap where you can discover the rich culture of the Limboo people and their unique lifestyle in this high-altitude environment.

Experience one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim at Pemayangtse, which is perched on a ridge overlooking the Rangit River. Established in the 17th century, its three-storey gompa features beautiful wall paintings and sculptures, as well as a seven-tiered wooden model of Guru Rimpoche’s abode.

Afterwards, explore the remains of Sikkim’s second capital at Rabdentse, which was destroyed by the invading Gurkha army in the early-19th century. See the remains of the Risum Gompa monastery and the three chortens where the royal family once prayed, before taking in the commanding views of the Kanchenjunga.

Hike to one of the waterfalls surrounding Pelling, such as the impressive Khangchendzonga Waterfall and Rimbi Waterfalls near the historic Karchen Powerhouse. Pelling is also a good base for visiting the sacred waters of Khecheopalri Lake where it’s believed that birds ensure not a single leaf is left floating on the surface.

Getting around Pelling

Pelling is around five hours’ drive from Siliguri’s Bagdogra Airport, which has regular flights to New Delhi and Mumbai. Buses and private vehicles connect Pelling with Siliguri and Gangtok, while the hill town is compact enough to explore on foot.
