About Makarska

A cheerful, dynamic city edged with rugged mountains on one side and sparkling coast on the other, Makarska offers vigorous hiking trails, fabulous beaches and sunny streets lined with cafes and restaurants. Amble around the medieval buildings, soak up the sun and then relax with a drink and a beautiful ocean view.

Things to do in Makarska

Makarska’s lovely pebble beaches are backed by a palm-lined promenade with a selection of cafes, ice cream parlors and souvenir shops. There’s plenty for water sports enthusiasts, including stand-up paddleboats, jet skis and banana boat rides.

Only a short walk from the beach is the medieval St Mark’s Church with its wonderful display of religious artwork. Spend some time at the Malacological Museum in the old Franciscan monastery and admire its renowned collection of seashells.

Behind the town is Biokovo, Croatia’s second-highest mountain. There are various well-marked trails that lead to the peak, where you can see views of Italy to the west and the mountains of Bosnia to the east. On the lower slopes is the botanical garden of Kotišina, displaying a colorful collection of native plants and flowers.

The hub of Makarska’s lively nightlife is Deep Makarska, a bar built into a natural cave at the end of the harbor. Have a drink on the terrace or party on the dance floor with the resident DJ. Further up the promenade, Pivac offers a more relaxed atmosphere and a selection of craft beer.

Getting around Makarska

Split Airport is 65 kilometers away from Makarska. The scenic drive into town takes around 90 minutes along the coast and there are regular long-distance buses. It’s possible to rent a car or scooter in town and there are minibusses that go up into the mountains.
