About Lemnos

Lemnos is a picturesque island marooned in the Aegean Sea. Despite its incredible natural beauty, the island feels unspoiled and off-the-beaten-track. Relax on gold-sand beaches, explore ancient Hellenistic ruins and discover the island’s passion for food, wine and seafood.

Things to do in Lemnos

Base yourself in Myrina, the island’s lively capital. The port town straddles a pair of bays and radiates historic charm. Get lost in a maze of narrow streets lined with Neoclassical mansions, sip finely-ground “ibrik” coffee in a sunny square and shop for souvenirs at handicraft shops.

The Castle of Myrina towers over the capital and is one of the most evocative in Greece. The castle was built by the Venetians in the 13th century and watches over the town from a volcanic headland. Walk around the ruins of the ancient fortress and enjoy far-reaching views over the Aegean Sea. On clear days, you can make out Mount Athos on the Greek mainland.

Lemnos is littered with fascinating prehistoric sites and ruins. The Sanctuary of the Kabeiroi is perched on a clifftop overlooking a cobalt-blue bay and dates back to the Hellenistic period. Walk around the ruined sanctuary and follow the cliffside trail down to the beach, where you can explore a secret sea cave.

Lemnos is a foodie paradise and will tantalise your taste buds with farm-to-table cuisine. Seafood dominates most menus in Lemnos, where you can expect to see dishes like fried calamari, chargrilled octopus and pan-fried fish. You’ll also be tempted by dishes like rabbit stew, pork souvlaki and “flomaria” pasta served in a rich tomato sauce and sprinkled with “kalathaki” soft sheep’s cheese. Waterfront tavernas combine excellent food with beautiful views.

Getting around Lemnos

Local buses operate across Lemnos and are a good way to visit towns and villages. Myrina is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while rental cars offer the freedom to explore Lemnos at your own pace. Lemnos International Airport "Hephaestus" is a 20-minute drive from Myrina.
