Nature enthusiasts shouldn’t miss exploring Periyar National Park, where you can wander through verdant evergreen forests and spot various native animals, including deer, elephants and sambar. Don’t forget to visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve, which features boat cruises that reveal elephants along the water’s edge, as well as monkeys and tigers.

Discover a significant part of Indian culture at the Kadathanadan Kalari Centre & Navarasa Kathakali Centre. This intimate venue puts on regular Indian martial arts performances showcasing the talents of locals. Afterwards, venture out to Abraham’s Spice Garden to browse a wealth of locally-grown spices for bargain prices. The garden also features exotic fruits, which you can see on a guided tour with Abraham.

Want to experience some of the best views of the region? Drive to Parunthumpara Hill View Point to admire 360-degree vistas of livestock grazing in the countryside. It’s a short drive from the Pattumalay Heritage Tea Factory, where you can take a guided tour before purchasing tea produced on site.

If you prefer to stay closer to town, visit the nearby Suranganur Waterfalls to see a collection of cascading falls plunging down a steep cliff face.
