Where to stay in Centre, Glasgow

About Centre

One of the busiest and most vibrant places in Scotland, Glasgow city centre is the main area and central business district of the city, defined by the high street and bordered by the River Clyde and M8 Motorway. It is the geographical heart of Glasgow and full of entertainment and activity, ranging from shops to cultural buildings to monuments to offices, with a blend of historic architecture and modern design. The city centre splits itself into three separate districts, namely Merchant City, the Financial District and the Retail and Theatre District, all of which focus on key aspects of Glaswegian culture.

Merchant City is the original section and the medieval remains of Glasgow city centre, defined by the Glasgow Cross and Tolbooth Steeple and contains various old converted warehouses and independent art scenes. The Financial District of Glasgow city centre is full of high skyscrapers and banking businesses, with many UK companies having their headquarters in the area, as it is one of the largest financial quarters in the country. The Retail and Theatre District contains some of the most prominent cultural buildings in Glasgow, like The Theatre Royal and the Gallery of Modern Art, as well as the shopping centre of the city, based around Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street. The core of Glasgow city centre is George Square, home to significant public statues and the City Council and City Chambers buildings, making it a popular venue for local events and festivals.

Built on a grid system, the city centre of Glasgow is easy to travel around, especially by foot or by bike, although there is also a subway system navigating the city which is easy and reliable to use. For longer journeys, the city centre has a number of train stations, including the main Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations, as well as local and long distance buses.

The origins of city centre began in the east of Glasgow, developing in what was formerly the residential district of the Tobacco Lords, who earned money through the tobacco trade of the 18th and 19th centuries. During the Industrial Revolution, the town expanded westward and its medieval origins, including the 15th century Cathedral that remained as a reminder of the city’s past. Since the 1980s, old sections of the centre have undergone regeneration projects, transforming historic buildings into luxury apartments and commercial spaces.
