About Ginzan Onsen

Ginzan Onsen is an idyllic hot spring town set in the heart of the mountains. Historic “ryokan” guesthouses, gas-lit streetlamps and stunning mountain views give Ginzan Onsen a postcard-perfect feel. Narrow streets criss-cross the pedestrianised town centre.

A river flows through the town centre and is lined with wood-framed buildings. Many house hotels that will charm you with traditional features like ornate woodwork, tatami mat floors and “shoji” paper screen walls.

Enjoy a soak in one of the affordable “onsen” public baths in the town centre. The mineral-rich water will leave your skin feeling smooth and soft. Many ryokans also welcome non-guests for a fee. Some offer outdoor baths with breathtaking views.

Near the foot of the waterfall is the entrance to a historic silver mine built in the Edo Period. A short, well-lit tunnel takes you into the mine and offers a glimpse of how silver was mined in the 17th century. You’ll also find beautiful nature trails around the base of the waterfall.
