Sprawling along the Han River to the west of Seoul, Gimpo borders the Yellow Sea and North Korea. It’s home to a 17th-century fortress and family-friendly theme park, as well as a fascinating walking trail that follows South Korea’s fenced northern boundary.
Gimpo’s most impressive landmark is the Munsusanseong Fortress, which was built in 1694 and saw intense battles with the French Military during the 19th century. Follow the hiking trail from the fortress to the 8th-century Munsusa Temple to soak up sweeping views of the Han River and Samgaksan Mountain.
From the Munsusanseong Fortress, you can also follow the Pyeonghwa-Nuri “Riverside” Trail that hugs the DMZ fences to Deokpojin Fort. Admire the peace murals adorning the Wonmeoru Quay and see migratory birds along the Yeomhagang River, before arriving in Gimpo’s lively port at Daemyeonghang.
Nestled in the foothills of the Munsusan mountain is the Gimpo International Sculpture Park, where around 30 large-scale works are exhibited. Follow the picturesque walking trails to admire sculptures by renowned Italian Arte Povera artist, Giovanni Anselmo, as well as works by local artists expressing a desire for reunification.
Travelling with kids? Visit the Taesan Family Park, which features a water park and various nature trails at the base of Tae Mountain. Get hands-on in the ceramics workshop and discover basic scientific concepts at the mini windmill, then stretch your legs along one of the wildflower-lined walking trails.
Gimpo International Airport is a 30-minute train ride from the centre of Gimpo, while Incheon International Airport is around one hour away. Seoul is just under an hour by train from Gimpo and buses access most areas of the city.
Gimpo is home to many highly-rated hotels, one of which is Hotel Marinabay Seoul, which has a current rating of 7.8. For other potential stays, consider Rest Hotel and Gimpo Stavia Hotel, which can also be great places to stay in Gimpo.
