About Fort Tejon State Historic Park

Located between the San Emigdio and Tehachapi mountains in Grapevine Canyon, Fort Tejon is a former United States Army outpost that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was constructed in 1854 to protect settlers from attacks by Native American tribes and Californios following the discovery of gold deposits in the region.

Stop by the visitor’s centre to learn about the history of Fort Tejon before strolling between the historic plaques, foundations and buildings that dot the site. Explore the restored barracks where old uniforms and artefacts are displayed, then wander through the period-furnished rooms of the commanding officer's quarters.

Take note of the gravesite of Peter Lebeck, who was reportedly killed by a grizzly bear and see the materials used in Dragoon life that are stored in the quartermaster building. Fort Tejon regularly hosts Civil War reenactments that bring the area’s history to life, with shade provided for spectators beneath the site’s 400-year-old oak trees.
