About Dongara

Positioned at the mouth of the Irwin River, Dongara is renowned as the “Rock Lobster Capital of Australia” and features a wealth of angling opportunities. Dongara overlooks the Indian Ocean and has an inviting main beach, historical and cultural landmarks and waterfront parks.

Things to do in Dongara

Those keen on fishing will enjoy a visit to Port Denison Marina, where you can see one of the largest rock lobster fishing fleets in Western Australia. The marina is also home to three jetties where anglers cast lines out to reel in tailor, silver bream, mulloway and whiting.

If you prefer to spend your time at the beach, head down to the sandy shoreline in front of Seaspray Cafe. Here you can enjoy a relaxing swim or surf in the Indian Ocean, before ducking into the cafe for freshly-roasted coffee and light meals. Afterwards, wander up to Irwin River Lookout for panoramic views across the river into neighbouring Port Denison.

Discover more about the area’s history at the Irwin District Museum, a former 19th-century police station, courthouse and gaol that now houses interesting artefacts and information about Dongara’s past. Russ Cottage sits across the Irwin River and features an array of historical exhibits, ranging from black-and-white photographs to personal belongings.

Don’t forget to snap a picture of the Big Lobster Dongara, one of Australia’s iconic Big Things. You can see it on the way out to Dongara Golf Course, which boasts 18 championship-level holes overlooking the Indian Ocean. Time your visit with the monthly Dongara Markets, when Town Park is filled with local stallholders selling fresh produce, handicrafts, clothing and gifts.
