About Birmingham Airport

Welcoming more than 10 million passengers a year, Birmingham Airport is one of the UK’s busiest air transit hubs. It services both domestic and international flights and houses a fantastic range of facilities catering to the needs of every traveller.

The main terminal serves up a great selection of shops and restaurants, as well as a dedicated kids area to keep little ones entertained while travelling. Today, more than 30 airlines operate from Birmingham Airport's main terminal, flying passengers to destinations across the globe.

Birmingham Airport is located 10 kilometres south-east of the city centre. By car, the journey takes around 25 minutes, with the train journey whisking passengers to and from the airport in just 10 minutes. A handful of airport hotels surrounds the area, in addition to car rental agencies for a quick getaway.

While today Birmingham Airport is a major British transport hub, it wasn’t always so successful. Plans were first put forward in 1928, though construction was delayed by the Great Depression. It finally opened its gates in 1939 and was given a royal reception by the Duchess of Kent. It served a brief stint as a RAF base during World War II, before being returned to civilian use in the mid-1940s.
