About Battle Creek

Named for a fight that took place here between a government land survey party and Native American inhabitants, Battle Creek radiates at the junction of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Rivers. It’s home to cultural landmarks celebrating famous residents and one of Michigan’s largest zoos, as well as plenty of opportunities to experience its country town lifestyle.

Things to do in Battle Creek

Discover the legacy of one of the world’s most famous cereal makers at the W.K. Kellogg Manor House, where this cereal magnate once lived with his wife. It boasts a stunning setting overlooking Gull Lake, with guided tours available within its restored period interior.

Just to the south of the town centre is the 175-hectare Binder Park Zoo that is famed for its African wildlife, including impala, zebra, antelope, gazelle and ostrich. Safari through the savannah, feed the giraffes, then witness Chinese red pandas, American black bears and even a snow leopard along the zoo’s elevated boardwalks.

If you want to meet the locals and learn a few new dance moves, head to the Backroads Saloon once the sun goes down. They hold line dancing nights throughout the week, with an in-house DJ playing country and classic rock on other evenings.

For a unique Battle Creek experience, time your visit for a performance by the Brass Band of Battle Creek. It brings together brass players from the United States and Europe, gaining a cult status in town.

Getting around Battle Creek

Battle Creek Station is the main transport hub in the city, with both trains and buses departing from here across the state of Michigan. Buses are the main means of getting around the city, although you’ll need your own vehicle to access Binder Park Zoo.
