Avila is the capital city of the province of Avila, situated in the heart of Spain within Castile and León, 120 kilometres north-west of Madrid. Avila is an internationally acclaimed tourist attraction due to its encompassing mediaeval infrastructure and embracement of traditional culture. The town itself is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old city of Avila is brimming with Romanesque cathedrals and educational museums encircled by its most famous feature, a well-preserved, magnificent medieval stone wall. The Cathedral of Ávila is a hugely popular tourist attraction as well being one of the first Gothic cathedrals in Spain. Two of the most prominent museums in the city are the Museum of Avila and the Museum of Santa Teresa.

Public transportation in Avila is served by the Avila Railway Station which runs routes between the city and Segovia. From Madrid, it is an hour’s drive by car. Walking is the most popular form of transit around the town itself.

The stone wall of Avila was constructed by Casandro Romano and Florin de Pitanga, beginning in 1090 and the building of the Cathedral of Avila was initiated in 1107 by Alvar Garcia de Estrella. Both monuments stand in pristine condition as testaments of Spanish history to this day.
