Set in the Gulf of Thailand, Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is made up of 42 stunning tropical islands. It spreads across 100 square kilometres and is known for its sugar-white beaches, turquoise water and sheer limestone cliffs.
Many of the islands are fringed by lush jungle and swaying palm trees. There are hidden lagoons to discover, which supposedly inspired Alex Garland’s cult novel “The Beach”. Accessible by a steep trail, Wua Ta Lap Viewpoint commands stunning panoramas over the park and islands. Adventurous travellers can rent camping gear and spend the night camping on one of the islands.
Guided tours are the easiest way to explore the park. Most offer plenty of time to bask on the array of postcard-perfect beaches and snorkel at the shallow coral reefs around Ko Tai Plao and Ko Samsao.
Getting there
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is in Surat Thani Province. Private day tours run from Ko Samui and Ko Pha-Ngan, around 30 kilometres away.
