Where to stay in Vorarlberg

About Vorarlberg

Vorarlberg immerses you in a landscape of rugged mountains, cobalt-blue lakes and lush pine forests. Spend a few days visiting museums and galleries in the state capital of Bregenz, then venture further afield to discover scenic hiking trails and world-class ski resorts.

Things to do

Bregenz is the stylish state capital and enjoys a picturesque setting on the banks of Lake Constance. The city is famously cultured, with attractions like Kunsthaus showcasing contemporary art by masters such as Ed Atkins and Miriam Cahn. Vorarlberg Museum occupies a striking contemporary building and charts the unique history, heritage and culture of the state. Exhibits are diverse and cover everything from ancient Roman artefacts to modern art.

A cable car whisks you to the summit of Mt. Pfänder, where you can enjoy sweeping views over the city and surrounding peaks. There are several hiking trails to explore, including the 30-minute Alpine Game Park Pfänder where you can spot deer, ibex, whistling marmots and wild boar.

The Angelika Kauffmann Museum is located in the small village of Schwarzenberg and celebrates the legacy of the iconic Austrian painter. Your ticket also includes entry to the Heritage Museum housed in a postcard-perfect chalet.

Silvretta Stausee lake sits more than 2,000 metres above sea level at the foot of soaring Piz Buin mountain. The challenging Radsattel Circuit is one of the best day hikes in Vorarlberg, taking you into two valleys and through a spectacular mountain pass, with incredible views of Silvretta Stausee along the way.

Centuries-old Schattenburg castle watches over the medieval town of Feldkirch in the western corner of Vorarlberg. Climb up to the ramparts for sweeping views over the city and the surrounding mountains and vineyards. In the town centre, you’ll find cobbled streets lined with colourful townhouses and al fresco cafes.

Getting around

Vorarlberg is well-connected by roads and railways. In addition to a busy train station in Bregenz, you’ll find terminals in Feldkirch, Dornbirn, Hohenems and other towns. Bregenz is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The closest international airports are in Zurich and Munich.
