Where to stay in Texel

About Texel

An idyllic destination for beach vacations, Texel is one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, located off the coast in the Netherlands. It’s home to seven charming villages and long stretches of beach, as well as unique nature reserves protecting the island’s endemic plant and animal species.

Things to do in Texel

At the far northern tip of the island stands the Texel Lighthouse, which has been watching over neighbouring Vlieland for more than 150 years. Learn about its rich history as you climb to the top, from where there are panoramic views across the Dutch Wadden Islands. The surrounding dunes are home to a variety of bird species and there’s a Bird Information Centre in nearby De Cocksdorp.

Beachcombing has been a way of life in Texel for decades, with fascinating finds on display at the Shipwreck and Beachcombing Museum Flora. In addition to anchors, buoys and messages in bottles, the museum also features complete aircraft engines, a children’s play garden and a cafe with a sun-drenched terrace.

Stretching along the west coast of the island is the Dunes of Texel National Park, a protected landscape of dunes, beaches and heathlands traversed by hiking and cycling trails. A highlight of the park is Ecomare, a nature museum, aquarium and sanctuary where injured harbour seals, grey seals and porpoises are nursed back to health. Learn about the vital work that has been done here to help oil-smeared birds and baby seals, most of which are released back into the Wadden Sea.

Getting around Texel

Regular ferries connect to Texel from Den Helder, from where trains travel south to Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport. Buses are available throughout the island or you can bring your own vehicle on the ferry if you want the freedom to explore.
