Things to do

History buffs will love visiting the Izapa Ruins, an archaeological site containing pre-Hispanic, Olmec and Mayan ruins. Spend the morning exploring the restored pyramids and excavated ruins on a guided or private tour.

Head to the Archaeological Museum of Soconusco to learn about the history of the local region and how the cultures of Mayan, Olmec and Aztec were born. Pay a visit to this modern museum to admire its Art Deco architecture and explore the pre-Hispanic history of Soconusco.

Fancy a spot of shopping? Miguel Hidalgo Central Park, home to a beautiful water fountain and a Catholic church, is surrounded by numerous shops and restaurants. Spend a morning wandering the area searching the local market for souvenirs.

When it comes to dining, head to Ostioneria El Rinconcito, a local hangout spot and favourite seafood joint. Thanks to Tapachula’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the seafood here is delicious, with freshly caught and cooked lobster being served late into the evening.

Getting around

Tapachula International Airport is 30 minutes south-west of the city, with buses running regularly between the two. In the city, you can make use of the public buses, minivans and taxis to get around.
