About Provence

Sprawling between the Rhône River, the Mediterranean Sea and the Italian border, Provence is a historic region in southeastern France. It extends from the Southern Alps to the rolling vineyards of the Camargue plains and the sun-drenched beach resorts of the Côte d’Azur. It was known by the Romans as Provincia Romana and has retained a distinct cultural identity, despite being part of France for the last 500 years.

Things to do in Provence

Celebrity-studded beaches, photogenic lavender fields and centuries-old towns - Provence is one of France’s most enchanting destinations.

Explore atmospheric Avignon. Set along the banks of the Rhône River, Avignon is a charming medieval city that envelops a UNESCO World Heritage-listed core. It’s renowned for the centuries-old Palais des Papes, the arched Pont d’Avignon and the Romanesque-style Avignon Cathedral, which houses the mausoleum of Pope John XXII.

Wander the Old Port of Marseille. Since the 6th century BC, Marseille’s port has been a bustling trade hub and is watched over by the Louis XIV-built Fort Saint-Jean. It’s now a vibrant dining and entertainment district, with luxury yachts filling its quays and waterfront restaurants serving seafood sourced directly from the Quai des Belges fish market.

Hike the Gorges du Verdon. Stretching for 25 kilometres, this spectacular limestone canyon plunges more than 700 metres to a turquoise river below. While you can admire the canyon from several roadside lookouts, its natural beauty is best appreciated on its inspiring hiking trails and hundreds of climbing routes.

Live it up on the French Riviera. Encompassing the glamorous beach resorts of Cannes and Saint-Tropez, the French Riviera is a sun-drenched coastal region overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Visit the gorgeous gardens of colourful Menton, wander the cobblestone streets of Antibes or take a step back in time in the medieval village of Èze.
