Port Alfred is a sun-drenched coastal town set at the mouth of the Kowie River. Relax on golden sand beaches, stroll around the marina and enjoy a scenic river cruise. Game reserves dot the hinterland and offer a chance to see elephants, lions, zebras and other iconic South African wildlife.

Things to do in Port Alfred

Bask on the honey-coloured sand of Kelly’s Beach. The Blue Flag beach is set on the Kowie River estuary and features clean water and rolling waves. Scenic viewpoints dot the coast and are great for spotting dolphins and whales. East Beach is on the other side of the river mouth and is much quieter than its popular neighbour.

Tick off the Big 5 at Kariega Game Reserve. In addition to lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards, the 11,500-hectare park is home to giraffes, zebras, hippos and other South African icons. Spot hyenas prowling through the grasslands and identify more than 300 species of birds, including malachite sunbirds and pygmy kingfishers.

Year-round sunshine makes Port Alfred a great base for outdoor adventures on the Eastern Cape. Quad bike through the sand dunes or take things slow on a scenic cruise up the Kowie River. The golf courses are excellent and treat players to emerald-green fairways and beautiful scenery.
