Things to do in Ningxia
Head over to People’s Square in Jinfeng to delve into the regional culture at Ningxia Museum. Housing 40,000 historical relics, the museum focuses on Hui culture as well as the Western Xia Empire dating back to 1038.
To see prehistoric stone carvings, take a hike on paths winding through the Helan Mountains separating Ningxia from Mongolia. Spend time touring and tasting at the mountain-base wineries and vineyards, which now number over 100. Stop at the Silver Heights, Chateau St. Louis Ding and Qingxu vineyards or join a group tour that includes multiple winery stops and lunch or dinner.
Within 35 kilometres of Yinchuan City, you’ll find the fascinating Zhenbeipu West Studio, a film location for movies and television series, including “Big Words of Western Tour” and “Red Sorghum”. The studios spread across an ancient site with two castles constructed during the Qing and Ming dynasties. You can try acting, then explore the movie posters, antique furniture and exhibition halls.
China Hui Culture Park merges Chinese culture with ethnic Hui religion and traditions. You’ll find the Hui Museum, a customs village, performance centre and a startling white structure based on the Taj Mahal in India. In downtown Yinchuan, Nanguan Mosque stands out for its ornate domes, arched entryways and water fountain.
Getting around Ningxia
Rental cars are available at Yinchuan Hedong Airport, about 25 kilometres from the city centre. Trains connect to major cities and villages across the province and buses provide inter-city transportation.
