About Ngwesaung

Sugar-white sand, swaying palm trees and crystalline water make Ngwesaung one of the most popular beach resorts in Myanmar. When you’ve had your fill of sand and sunshine, head inland to enjoy freshly caught seafood and shop for locally-made handicrafts.

Things to do in Ngwesaung

Sun, sand and saltwater are the biggest draws in Ngwesaung. The beach is set on the Bay of Bengal and lures sunseekers in with its 15-kilometre stretch of sand fringed. Lush palms line the shoreline and add to the tropical mood.

At the northern end of the beach, a constellation of upscale resorts has transformed Ngwesaung from a sleepy fishing village into one of the trendiest beach destinations in Myanmar. Sip cocktails by lagoon-style swimming pools and indulge in a spa treatment. At the southern end of Ngwesaung, you’ll find a more laid-back, backpacker-friendly vibe.

Halfway between the two resorts is Ngwe Saung Village, a lively enclave filled with cafes and restaurants. Most menus feature freshly-caught fish, crab, shrimp and lobster hauled in from the Bay of Bengal. Stroll around the village to browse colourful stalls selling woven purses, beaded jewellery and other handicrafts.

Boat tours depart from the beach and whisk you to idyllic islands just offshore, where you can snorkel and explore the incredible underwater ecosystem. Ngwesaung is also one of the top scuba destinations in Myanmar, with a wonderland of colourful corals and tropical fish to admire. On land, other tours offer a chance to get up close with beautiful elephants.

Getting around Ngwesaung

Motorbikes are the easiest way to get around Ngwesaung and hop between the different resort areas while taxis are also popular. Yangon is a six-hour drive east. Long-distance buses depart from Yangon Central Railway Station and travel directly to Ngwesaung.
