Millstatter See, or Lake Millstatter in English, is known as the Jewel of Carinthia. It’s surrounded by rolling hills and rugged mountain peaks, making it one of the most picturesque lakes in Austria. In the summer months, holidaymakers flock to bask in the sunshine and swim in the crystalline water.
The lake is dotted with charming towns and villages like Seeboden, Lendorf and Spittal. In the lively spa town of Millstatt am See, you can admire beautiful historic villas and explore an ancient Benedictine monastery. Porcia Castle towers over Spittal and houses the excellent Folk Culture Museum, where you can learn about the rich history and heritage of Carinthia.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery, including hiking in the mountains and cycling around the lakeshore. Things don’t slow down in the winter, as Millstatter See transforms into a snow-dusted playground. Enjoy sledding, cross-country skiing, ice skating and other winter activities.
Restaurants in Millstatter See serve a unique fusion of Alpine and Adriatic cuisine. Enjoy fresh-caught Carinthian lake trout served with wild foraged mushrooms and “reindling” cake filled with butter, sugar and cinnamon.
Millstatter See is located in the Austrian state of Carinthia, a 2.5-hour drive from Graz and four hours from Vienna.
