Things to do in Mihara
Take a leisurely drive or board the Marine View railway to enjoy scenic mountain and island views along the Seto Inland Sea coastline running from Mihara to Takehara. Stop along the way to swim at Sunami Beach Park, then have dinner at the beachfront Zona Italian restaurant.
The forested area outside Mihara is full of hiking trails and thundering waterfalls as well as Sankeien Garden, home to a number of historical buildings. Enjoy seasonal fruit picking in local orchards and have a picnic near the serene lotus pond at Seishin Temple Park. Rent a bicycle to traverse an Olympic-level 12-kilometre course built for the Asian Games.
From the Port of Mihara, take a ferry to Setoda on Ikuchijima Island, home to famous structures, such as the three-tiered pagoda at Kojoji Temple. The area is known for growing mikan mandarin oranges, so keep an eye out for fruit stands and local vendors offering steamy citrus-filled foot baths.
Roam through the ruins of Mihara Castle, also referred to as Ukishiro Castle, constructed in 1582. Climb to the remaining base of the tenshu, the highest level of the castle, for spectacular sunset views of Mihara City below.
