About Metz

Magnificent architecture, world-class museums and a flourishing café culture make Metz one of the most captivating capitals in France. The city enjoys a picturesque setting at the junction of the Seille and Moselle Rivers, surrounded by rolling countryside and lush oak forests.

Things to do in Metz

Tree-lined promenades and stately boulevards crisscross the elegant Quartier Impérial. Strolling around the district, you’ll be impressed by landmarks like the Romanesque Gare de Metz-Ville Train Station and the enormous Main Post Office built from rose-coloured sandstone.

Cathedral St-Etienne towers over the Old Town and is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Grand Est region. Light streams into the cathedral through beautiful stained-glass windows created by famous artists such as Marc Chagall. Admiring the jewel-coloured windows, it’s easy to see why the cathedral has been nicknamed “God’s Lantern” by locals.

From ancient Roman artefacts and Egyptian statues to Middle Ages art and Renaissance masterpieces, Musée de la Cour d'Or is a cultural treasure trove. Centre Pompidou-Metz champions contemporary art and occupies a space-age building designed by Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban. Don’t miss the mind-bending cubist works by Fernand Léger.

As the capital of the Lorraine region, Metz is a fantastic place to try Quiche Lorraine. If you’re not familiar with the specialty French dish, it features a savoury filling of eggs, cheese and heavy cream set in a flaky pastry shell. Val d'Ajol andouillette, an oak-smoked sausage made with pork, spices and aromatic herbs, is another local specialty. There are restaurants for every occasion, from swanky Michelin-starred establishments to casual bistros.
