With a peak height of 4,158 metres, Jungfrau is one of the tallest mountains in the Bernese Alps and was first conquered back in 1811. Since then, the nine-kilometre-long Jungfrau Railway has been constructed, making Jungfrau one of the most accessible and visited places in Alps. This train runs to Europe’s highest-altitude stations, which sits at 3,454 metres high.
Jump aboard the Jungfrau Railway and sit back as you cruise within a seven-kilometre-long tunnel system. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to disembark at a stop within the tunnel and admire spectacular glacial views across the Eiger North Face. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with viewing platforms overlooking the Alps.
Jungfrau offers a spectacular alpine landscape of ice, snow and rugged rocks as far as the eye can see. If you prefer to hike up the mountain, you can embark on the challenging trek up a direct northern route. At around 3,500 metres up you’ll reach the Jungfraujoch, which boasts a hotel, restaurants, observatory, research station, cinema and ice sculptures.
Getting there
Jungfrau is about 75 kilometres from Bern, where you can fly into Bern Airport from various cities around Switzerland. The best way to reach Jungfrau is by catching the Jungfrau Railway or hiking up the northern route.
