Things to do in Getafe
Plaza de la Constitucion is the beating heart of Getafe. Historic buildings frame the bustling square, which is the perfect place to soak in the local atmosphere. Claim a table at an outdoor café and sip a Spanish hot chocolate or glass of fruity sangria. Narrow streets branch off the plaza and reveal trendy boutiques and atmospheric tapas bars.
The Cathedral of St. María Magdalena towers over Getafe and combines elements of Baroque and Renaissance architecture. Soaring stone columns support the domed ceiling, which is decorated with colourful frescoes.
See an impressive collection of aircraft at Museo del Aire. It’s housed in the Cuatro Vientos Air Base and features exhibits on the history of flight and the Spanish Air Force. Work your way through multiple hangars and see hundreds of aircraft, ranging from vintage biplanes to retired warbirds.
Cheer on Getafe CF at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. The enormous stadium is the home ground of the beloved local football team and is named after the legendary Spanish player, who was born and raised in Getafe.
Leafy parks and green spaces provide a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of Madrid. Tree-lined paths and flower-filled gardens make Parque de la Alhóndiga an ideal spot for an afternoon stroll. Parque Lorenzo Azofra is smaller and features a picturesque lake and grassy picnic areas.
Getting around Getafe
Getafe is compact and easy to explore on foot. Regular trains run between Getafe Central Station and Madrid in around 20 minutes. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is a 30-minute drive from Getafe.
