About Elkton, MD

Serving as the seat of Cecil County, Elkton is a picturesque town near the northern headwaters of Chesapeake Bay. During the 1920s and 1930s, it was nicknamed "the elopement capital of the East Coast”, with couples flocking here to wed due to Maryland’s non-restrictive marriage laws.

Things to do in Elkton

Take a step back in time at Hollingsworth House, a late-18th-century residence that has been recreated as it would have appeared in the 19th century. It lies at the junction of Little and Big Elk Creeks on a site known as “Elk Landing” where Elkton’s earliest settlement was located. In addition to period furnishings, archaeological findings from the property are on display.

Also on the bank of Big Elk Creek is Meadow Park, a popular recreational spot with a softball diamond and a football field. You can stretch your legs along one of the creekside trails or run around in the children’s playground. Meadow Park lies adjacent to the Cow Pond Recreation Area and Hatchery Park, which occupies the site of a former fish hatchery. Its fish-rearing ponds provide a habitat for herons, egrets and waterfowl.

A short drive north of Elkton is Milburn Orchards, which has been operating since 1902. It hosts “pick your own” experiences throughout the year, with everything from peaches to raspberries and apples available. Kids will love the playground, petting zoo and hayrides, while parents can pick up honey and baked goods at Milburn’s Farm Market.
