About Chichen Itza

One of Mexico’s most-visited archaeological sites, Chichen Itza is a pre-Columbian complex of Mayan ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula. The Heritage-listed site features diverse architecture reflecting its varied population and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Admire the sculptures of feathered serpents decorating the immense pyramid of El Castillo, then follow the steep interior stairway to view King Kukulcan’s Jaguar Throne. Visit the Great Ballcourt, one of the largest of its kind in ancient Mesoamerica, then marvel at the murals adorning the adjacent Temple of the Jaguars.

Learn about the sacrificial rituals of the Mayans at the Wall of the Skulls and the astronomical innovations at the circular temple of El Caracol. Stay until after dark to watch the impressive light and sound show, “The Night of Kukulcan”, which brings Chichen Itza’s rich history to life.
