A seaside resort on the Baltic coast, Binz boasts charming Victorian buildings, sandy beaches and beech and chestnut forests. Seafood restaurants and bars dot the waterfront, along with spa hotels where you can enjoy a massage or relax in the sauna.

Things to do

The first stop for any tourist should be Binz’s pier, which affords a panoramic view of the promenade and its elegant villas. The five-kilometer beach lies in a protected bay with gentle waves, making it ideal for families. Walk to the end and you’ll spot the graceful curves of the lifeguard hut, slightly reminiscent of a UFO.

A short drive out of town is Granitz hunting lodge, with its beautifully-restored interiors and 19th-century furniture. Climb the circular staircase in the tower for a beautiful view of the town and coast. While there you can see the surrounding Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and discover the lush forests, rare orchids and megalithic tombs that contributed to its Heritage-listed status.

Looking to sample the local cuisine? Head to Binz to try the seafood, often caught the same day. Eat at the Fischküche in Hotel Am Meer to watch your meal prepared in the open kitchen or grab a table at Poseidon to sample their traditional smoked fish. The most popular place for a drink is Strandbar 28, where you’ll find a lovely beach view and an assortment of cocktails.

Getting around

From Hamburg Airport, a direct train to Binz takes a little under four hours. There is a frequent shuttle bus that covers Binz and nearby attractions and most of the resort towns in Rügen are linked by the historical narrow-gauge railway affectionately known as “Rushing Roland”.
