About Baihe District

Sprawling south of Chiayi City, Baihe District is a largely rural area dotted with lotus farms and reservoirs. It’s renowned for its therapeutic hot springs and photogenic Buddhist temple, which overlooks Taiwan’s largest plain.

Things to do in Baihe District

One of Baihe District’s most popular attractions is the Guanziling Hot Spring, which was discovered by Japanese troops atop Zhentou Mountain in 1898. Once home to the Pingpu Tribe, its cave releases natural gas that has been burning for the last three centuries and is a source of spring water with a dark grey colour. In addition to hot spring pools for soaking, the complex includes several restaurants.

For a cultural fix, visit the hillside Buddhist complex of Huoshan Biyun Temple, which was established in 1798 in a blending of Minnan and Japanese architectural styles. Learn about the local legend of the temple’s “rice gushing hole” and enjoy the expansive views across the Chianan Plain from its main square. Huoshan Biyun Temple is a particularly popular destination for photographers at sunset.

Just east of Baihe District is the large Zengwen Dam, which is the third-tallest dam in Taiwan and responsible for storing water that irrigates the Chianan Plain. It forms the largest reservoir in the country, the Zengwen Reservoir, which offers plenty of recreational pursuits. In addition to waterfront playgrounds, hiking and cycling trails, there is a lookout tower and scenic boat cruises are available.

Getting around Baihe District

Baihe District is around 45 minutes’ drive from the centre of Chiayi City and 35 minutes from Chiayi Airport, which has regular flights to Kinmen and Penghu. The larger Tainan Airport is an hour away. Buses travel throughout Baihe District while having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore.
