About Águilas

Aguilas is a lively Mediterranean port city on the sun-drenched Costa Cálida. The former Roman fishing port was founded in the 1700s and combines historic charm with beautiful beaches and a bustling street scene. Relax in the palm-filled Old Town, explore an ancient fortress, and discover some of the best dive sites in the Mediterranean.

Things to do in Águilas

Aguilas is set on the Costa Cálida, a 250-kilometre-long stretch of coast famous for its sunny climate. Urban beaches like Playa de las Delicias are within walking distance of the town centre. For a quieter beach scene, escape to nearby stretches of sand like La Higuerica, Calabardina and La Carolina. Bask on the golden sand and cool off in the crystal-clear Mediterranean Sea. Aguilas is also a launchpad to some of the best dive sites in the Mediterranean, including Fraile Island and Cabo Cope.

From the handsome 19th-century City Hall to the whitewashed San José Church, Aguilas is dotted with historic buildings that recall the city’s ancient past. Escape the midday heat in Plaza de España, a beautiful square shaded by lush palm trees and rubber plants. Castillo de San Juan de Aguilas towers over the Old Town and treats you to fantastic views over the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The fortress was built in the 1500s and continued to defend the city until the 19th century.

The bustling harbour is lined with waterfront restaurants and has an infectious holiday atmosphere. Admire the picturesque black-and-white striped lighthouse and walk to the end of the landmark Hornillo Jetty, where lead, iron and silver were once loaded onto cargo ships.
