Where to stay in Voronezh

About Voronezh

Voronezh has been a major manufacturing and industrial hub since Peter the Great chose to build Russia’s first naval shipyard here in the 17th century. Several universities attract students from all over Russia, while trendy cafes and bars give the city a youthful ambience.

Things to do

Learn about Voronezh’s long maritime history at the Ship Museum, a replica of the first warship built in the city. Get a feel for what life would have been like in the Russian Navy, then visit the adjacent Admiralty Square church where Peter the Great baptised his ships. Voronezh Oceanarium is one of Europe’s largest aquariums and has a huge collection of penguins, seals and over 200 fish species, along with daily tiger shark feedings.

At the heart of Voronezh is Annunciation Cathedral, a beautiful Byzantine-style church that contains the relics of several saints. Another must-see religious site is the Akatov Women’s Monastery, a restored nunnery covered with frescoes, which features a lovely garden near the river. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stroll around Central Market and check out its fresh produce, spices and little stalls selling Russian cakes.

Just north of the city is Voronezh Nature Reserve, a forested area with outstanding hiking trails and a beaver breeding centre open to visitors. While there, stop by the Palace of Oldenburg and see the beautifully-restored rooms where Princess Eugenia once held royal balls and parties.

Getting around

Voronezh Airport is 20 kilometres north of the city and handles both domestic and international flights. Voronezh has a modern public transport network consisting of buses, trolleybuses and trams that stop at many major attractions, while taxis are also available.
