Where to stay in Steigen

About Steigen

Hugging the coast of Vestfjorden, Steigen is a spectacular municipality in Nordland that’s accessed via the eight-kilometre-long Steigen Tunnel. It’s dissected by numerous fjords and dotted with several islands, including historically-rich Engeløya. With its diversity of natural landscapes and archaeological sites dating back to the Bronze Age, Steigen is a hidden gem of northern Norway.

Things to do

You can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the Steigen Brygge to explore the coastal landscapes at your leisure or hire a bicycle to pedal along the municipality’s scenic roads. Boats can also be hired for fishing and island-hopping in the azure waters of the Vestfjorden. Steigen features several beautiful beaches where you can bathe during the warmer months, with Brennviksanden and Bøsanden among the most popular.

Spend a day exploring the largest island in Steigen, Engeløya, where ancient burial mounds have been uncovered. It’s home to the Prestegårdsskogen Nature Reserve, which features the world’s most northerly known hazel forest and the immense Helldalsisen glacier.

Want to stretch your legs? Follow the nine-kilometre-long trail that leads to Trohornet, the highest peak in the Myklebostadfjellet massif. It winds between rural fields and wetlands to a heather plateau before ascending the first of three peaks that lead to the top of Trohornet. The views from the summit are truly magnificent, stretching across the lakes and beaches of Steigen towards the Lofoten Islands.

Getting around

Steigen is around three hours’ drive from Bodø and Bodø Airport, which has flights to destinations across Norway. Buses travel between most villages within the municipality, although having your own car gives you greater freedom to explore. Hiring a boat is ideal for exploring the surrounding islands.
