Where to stay in Murmansk

About Murmansk

The world's largest city north of the Arctic Circle, Murmansk sits where the Tuloma River flows into the Barents Sea. It’s home to a landmark statue and fascinating local history museum, as well as a former nuclear-powered icebreaker ship museum.

Things to do

The most prominent landmark in Murmansk is the Alyosha Statue, a 30-metre-tall statue of a soldier that watches over the city. Officially titled the “Defenders of the Soviet Arctic”, it was erected in 1974 to honour the Soviet defence of the Arctic during World War II.

Want to step aboard a nuclear-powered icebreaker? Visit the decommissioned Soviet ship, Lenin, which is now moored in the docks of Murmansk. Join a guided tour to explore its multiple decks as you learn about the ship’s Arctic navigations and how it was powered using nuclear fission reactors.

Discover the people and events that have shaped Murmansk at the Regional Studies Museum, which includes an extensive display on the city’s role in World War II. Admire the taxidermy native animals, learn about the history of Arctic exploration and browse the vintage radios and cameras in the “Made in the USSR” section.

Make a day trip to the Pechenga Monastery, located where the Pechenga River flows into the Barents Sea. Beautifully handcrafted without nails, its two wooden churches were destroyed during World War II, but have been meticulously rebuilt.

Getting around

There are daily flights from both Moscow and St. Petersburg to Murmansk Airport, which is around 45 minutes’ drive from Murmansk. Trains arrive from destinations across Russia at Murmansk Station, while buses and trolleybuses access most areas of the city.
