About McAllen

Slung low in southern Texas, McAllen is bordered by the lush Rio Grande Valley and the sun-baked Chihuahuan Desert. It's a hotspot for birdwatchers, history buffs and sunseekers, while also anchoring one of America's top grapefruit growing regions.

From Picasso lithographs to Latin American paintings, the International Museum of Art & Science showcases a diverse collection of historic artwork. The Museum of South Texas History is packed with multimedia exhibits covering everything from frontier ranches to pioneer steamboats.

To the south of the city is Quinta Mazatlan, a lavish Spanish Revival mansion. The estate is set in a lush Tamaulipan thorn forest that attracts a host of local bird species. Part of the World Birding Centre, it’s home to kiskadees, thrushes, green jays, chachalacas and hummingbirds.

Housed in a 1930s post office, the McAllen Heritage Centre offers a fascinating glimpse at local history. You can chat with the friendly volunteers and check out local talent showcased in the rotating "Artist's Corner" exhibition.
